Universe is a science-fiction role-playing game (SF RPG) developed in the late 1970s by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI). When SPI was bought by Tactical Simulations Rules (TSR), Universe went out of print. The trademark and copyright were held by either Wizards of the Coast (WotC, who bought TSR) or Decision Games (DG), or possibly Hasbro (NYSE stock symbol HAS) for a time. (We're not sure which; information is a little hard to come by.)
To summarize: Universe is an SF RPG created by SPI, which company was bought out by TSR, who were then bought by WotC. Either WotC, DG, or HAS may have held the TM to Universe, but it's abandoned now.
Everybody got that?
Anyhow, I'm a big fan of the game, even though it's out of print. There are a lot of online resources that will allow you to play the game without having to track down a vintage copy. In addition, I've been putting together some resources of my own.
